Evolution of Deus Ex

Deus Ex (2000)
The very first Deus Ex installment was under development by Ion Storm in 1999 and published by Eidos Interactive in 2000. The in-game setting takes place in a dystopian world during the year 2052. The main plot follows a rookie United Anti-Terrorist Coalition agent, JC Denton, as he sets out to combat terrorists forces. In his arsenal, Denton is equipped with limb augmentations which grants him advanced human capabilities. Denton has the ability to use portable drones, enhanced armor protection, and regeneration to overcome his enemies. As the plot unfolds, Denton becomes entangled in a deep and ancient conspiracy, encountering organizations such as the Hong Kong Triads, Majestic 12, and the Illuminati. Upon confronting the leader of the Illuminati, Denton eventually takes role of that position, and decides how to change the fate of humanity. In this case, the player decides how to change the future leading to the events of the second game.
Deus Ex: Invisible War (2003)
The second installment was developed and published by the same companies as in the first installment in 2003. The game takes place in 2072, twenty years after the events of Deus Ex. The world is being rebuilt after a catastrophic event called "The Collapse." Following a terrorist attack that destroys the city of Chicago, the player assumes the role of Alex D, a trainee at the Tarsus Academy, whose support is sought by several organizations. Alex D is equipped with superior weaponry, even slightly better than the augmentations in the first game. However, enemies proved to have augmentations as well. As the game progresses, the player learns of conspiratorial factions, such as the Knights Templar and The Order, which seek to drastically change the world. Near the end of the game, Alex comes into possession of data necessary for any of the factions to take control of the world. The faction will take full control depending on the player's choice on whom to support. That decision will forever change the future of mankind.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution (2011)
The third installment was developed by Eidos Montreal and published by Square Enix in 2011. The game is set in 2027, 25 years before the first game and 45 years before the second game. At the time, multinational corporations have grown in power beyond the control of national governments. The game follows Adam Jensen, the newly hired security manager at Sarif Industries, a growing biotechnology firm. After terrorists brutally attack Sarif's Headquarters, the mortality wounded Jensen is forced to undergo radical life-saving surgeries that replace areas of his body with advanced prosthesis and internal organ systems. Returning to work, he becomes embrolled in the global politics of the human enhancement movement in search for those responsible for the attack. Upon confronting the perpetrator responsible for the attacks at Sarif Industries, Jensen manages to take power and change the fate leading to the events of the next sequel; Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. Central themes to the game are the rise of corporations in globalization, espionage, human survival, poverty, and the ethics of advacing humans with artifical replacements for body parts.
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided (2016)
The fourth installment is currently being develop by Eidos Montreal and publish by Square Enix on August 23, 2016. Mankind Divided is set in the year 2029, two years after the events of Human Revolution and the "Aug Incident" - an event in which mechanically augmented humans became uncontrollably and lethally violent. Unbeknownst to the public, the affected augmented received implanted technology designed to control them by the shadowy Illuminati, which is abused by a rogue member of the group to discredit augmentations completely. The Illuminati successfully conceal the truth behind rumors and disinformation, while the augmented are now outcasts from normal humans in an era of "mechanical apartheid." Adam Jensen is the protagonist as in the first game, who's now working with Interpol to capture a terrorist group of augmented humans. Jensen secretly works for Juggernaut collective, a hacker group helping him to confront the Illuminati. Events in this game eventually leads to the timeline of the first game.
